Joining Centennial Coal (Centennial) in 2009, Richard Gelson’s career has gone from strength to strength, with Richard recently recognised the industry’s Young Achiever of the Year, at the NSW Minerals Council’s 2014 Industry and Supplier Awards.

The Young Achiever Award recognises an inspirational young professional between the ages of 18 and 35 who is building a successful career in mining.  Richard is certainly that and at the tender age of 28 was promoted to Production Manager at Centennial’s Springvale Colliery.   In this role, Richard is responsible for the planning, coordination and control of the coal production processes. Prior to this, Richard was promoted to Undermanager and Technical Services Manager at the ages of 25 and 26 respectively. These roles allowed Richard to demonstrate strong leadership potential whilst providing broad exposure to the technical and operational aspects of the business and workplace culture.

“It was a great honour, but comes on the back of significant hard work on the part of all the team at Springvale who really have rallied together recently to deliver some great results. I felt proud of my achievements, but also the achievements of the entire team, including all the underground crews at Springvale”, said Richard on receiving the award.

Richard studied mining engineering at UNSW, graduating in 2008 with first class honours and achieving the best overall performance in the degree programme.  In 2010, Richard completed postgraduate studies in mine ventilation at UNSW and is currently completing an Advanced Diploma in Management.

Richard’s ambition is to strengthen his professional and leadership development.  To realise this, Richard aims to attain his Mine Manager’s ticket and undertake an MBA. In the short-term however, Richard aims to continue achieving Springvale’s production targets and draw upon his team to improve mine-wide planning and implementation.

In the current challenging economic environment, Richard aspires to be in a position to influence and drive business sustainability.
