Airly Mine Makes the News
Airly mine hosted Samara and Tom from WIN News, a regional TV outlet, for a day in February. WIN News wanted to produce a feature for the evening news that provided an insight into a coal mine, how it operates and the important role Airly plays in the community.
The day started with a presentation about Centennial Coal and Airly mine and was followed by a safety induction in preparation for visiting underground. Samara and Tom were ‘kitted’ out with all the appropriate personal, protective equipment and transported underground where they saw coal being cut by a continuous miner and also roof bolting (used to secure the roof underground).
On the surface they saw where the coal comes out from underground onto a conveyer and travel to the coal stockpile. It was then explained how the coal via a reclaim tunnel travelled on another conveyer to the loading bin where the coal is then loaded onto a train before being railed off to port.
