Centennial’s Sporting Sponsorship Program is well and truly underway with the summer sports coming to a close and the winter sports preparing for an action packed season.
“We have really enjoyed receiving updates from the sporting clubs over the summer season, reading the highlights, seeing all of the photos and hearing of the success stories. It is exciting to be part of such an active local sporting community,” said Centennial’s Meredith Young.
Two of the most recent updates we have received include the season wrap of the Southern Lakes Cricket Club and the Lake Macquarie Dolphins Water Polo Club.
With 96 senior players, 115 junior players and 30 non playing members, the Southern Lakes Cricket Club is a force to be reckoned with being one of the largest cricket clubs in the Lake Macquarie and Newcastle district.
“I’d like to thank Centennial Coal for its support for our cricket season which has helped us achieve some great results across our junior and Under 21 teams,” said Club President, Aaron Gray.
“We had a successful year across all 13 teams with four of our junior teams making the Grand Finals for their respective age groups. We were successful with one of these teams winning the major trophy,” continued Aaron.
Not to let the junior teams have all of the success, the Club’s senior teams also performed well with the Under 21’s winning its overall grade competition, while its 4th division team finished as minor premiers.
“We have already begun planning for our pre-season which includes the second season of our Toronto Academy of Cricket Excellence to develop junior cricketer’s skills across the district and developing all of our graded senior teams,” concluded Aaron.
Diving into to the pool the Lake Macquarie Dolphins Water Polo Club also enjoyed success this season.
With over 70 members, the Club competes in all seven grades within the Newcastle Water Polo Competition which brings together clubs from Cessnock to Lake Macquarie to compete.
With the season just wrapping up, the Club took out five first place positions and one second place, with the Under 16 boys and girls teams, the Men’s A and B divisions and Women’s B division teams taking home the gold.
“With the Club continually growing and looking at developing its players so they are in a position to compete at a State and National level we were pleased to assist the Lake Macquarie Dolphins Water Polo Club to purchase new training equipment,” Meredith continued.
“We are looking forward to hearing from other Sporting Sponsorship Program recipients and receiving updates on their progress,” concluded Meredith.
