There has been mining at Newstan for over 125 years. Following geological difficulties experienced at the mine, Newstan was placed on care and maintenance in 2008, and over several years, embarked on an extensive exploration drilling programme.
As a result, Newstan has recommenced operations in an area of the mine that provides the platform for a proposed future extension to its existing operations. Newstan remains committed to the highest environmental standards while also remaining focused on the safety and well-being of employees.
A number of facilities that will vastly improve the ability to manage water at Newstan have been constructed including; the Southern Reject Emplacement Area (SREA), Clean Water Diversion Drain (CWDD) and the Final Pollution Control Dam (FPCD) expansion. Further water management initiatives are also being investigated.
Newstan is proposing two Projects known as the Newstan Extension Project and the Northern Coal Services Coal Logistics Project. Both projects will assist Newstan to implement new and proven technologies to build a safe, community and environmentally responsible, sustainable and productive operation.
